Heart Shaped Shadow

Creating heart shadows is very simple. It's a classic photography effect that wows everyone that has seen it for the first time. You don't need much to get started, simply a book, a ring and an off camera flash (although you can use the sun light as well).

The setup is quite simple. Lay the ring in the fold of a book as seen in the image. There is no right or wrong way. With digital photography, it's very easy to take hundreds of shots and find the best one. The light source, in this case it is an off camera flash, should be positioned opposite the camera, firing down at an angle. You can also use the sun as the light source, as long as it's a bright sunny day so that it can effectively cast a shadow. Follow the shadow in this image and image exactly where your light source would be to create this shadow.

Play with different positions for the camera and the flash. This is where you're personal touch can be applied to the image. Don't forget, this is digital photography. Shoot a ton of shots from different angles and different settings. You're bound to find one you like! Happy shooting!
