Rebel XS Released
Friday, 22 August 2008 08:04

Mixed in all the hoopla of SLRs today, Canon sneakily released the baby brother to the Canon Rebel XSi. Officially called the Canon Rebel XS, or the EOS 1000d). Suggested retail price is $699, but can be found for around $650. Don't buy it yet, let the dust settle and you'll be able to get it for even less.

Here are the official specs from Canon.

  • 10.1 megapixels
  • Digic III processor, 14 bit image conversion
  • 2.5 inch LCD
  • Approx. 3 shots per second
  • SD or SDHC memory card
  • 1.6 sensor crop factor
  • 7 AF points
  • Live View
  • Approx. 4.96 x 3.8 x 2.4 in./126.1 x 97.5 x 61.9mm

We think this was Canon's effort to stay competitive in the low price SLR market. Nikon's D40 (priced at $499) seemed to help sway buyers towards Nikon. Canon's counter punch? The Canon Rebel XS. We think this will turn out to be one of the top rated digital cameras of the year. We'll have a full review for you soon.

For you comparison shoppers out there, here is some online pricing for the Canon Rebel XS and the Canon Rebel XSI best price. Both include the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens.
